Jordan’s Hair Loss Story

Jordan came to The Hair Centre in his late 20s, experiencing male pattern baldness while actively maintaining his natural Afro-textured hair. For Jordan, like many Black men embracing the natural hair movement, hair loss presented a unique challenge: how to treat MPB effectively without compromising the natural curl pattern he had worked hard to maintain. The Natural Hair Dilemma:

For years, Jordan had avoided relaxers and chemical straighteners. His defined curls became integral to his personal and professional identity. When male pattern baldness appeared at his crown and temples, he faced a common concern for men with natural hair: would treatment require him to sacrifice his texture?

I'dd worked for years to get my hair healthy and natural," Jordan shared. "When I started losing density, I was worried that treating it would mean going back to chemicals or that the treatments wouldn't work properly with my curl pattern. I needed a solution that worked with my natural hair, not against it."

Jordan's MPB presented with thinning at the crown, visible scalp exposure, temple recession, and reduced overall density and curl definition. He also noticed weaker curls due to follicle miniaturisation.

  • Temple recession creating an uneven hairline
  • Overall density reduction affecting curl definition and volume
  • Miniaturisation of hair follicles producing thinner, weaker curls

Despite having a healthy scalp and well-maintained natural hair, the progression was noticeable. The thinning appeared more prominent because Afro-textured hair naturally coils away from the scalp, making reduced density more visible compared to straighter hair types.

The Natural Hair Movement Context:

The natural hair movement in Black communities emphasises:

  • Embracing natural curl patterns without chemical alteration
  • Healthy hair practices (protective styling, moisture retention, minimal heat)
  • Cultural pride and identity connected to natural texture
  • Community knowledge-sharing around natural hair care

Jordan's hair loss threatened this identity. He wasn't just losing hair — he risked losing the progress he had made in maintaining his natural texture.

Why Chemical-Free Treatment Mattered:

Jordan was clear that any treatment approach needed to:

  • Be compatible with natural, unprocessed Afro-textured hair
  • Preserve his existing curl pattern
  • Integrate with his current hair care routine
  • Deliver results without requiring chemical straightening

If you are experiencing male pattern baldness and want to preserve your natural Afro-textured hair, contact The Hair Centre to discuss personalised, chemical-free solutions tailored to your hair journey.

Jordan’s Hair Loss Treatment Plan

We created a treatment protocol tailored to Jordan’s natural hair lifestyle and MPB presentation.

Treatment Protocol:

  • 5% Vitastim applied twice daily to the crown and temple areas
  • 8% Biostim daily supplementation for hair strength and curl health
  • Natural hair-compatible application timed around his wash and styling schedule
  • Curl pattern preservation maintained throughout treatment

Application Technique for Natural Hair:

Morning Application (Pre-Styling):

  1. Apply Vitastim directly to the scalp using a dropper or fingertips
  2. Massage gently into the scalp (not through curls)
  3. Allow 10–15 minutes to fully absorb
  4. Proceed with a normal natural hair styling routine

Evening Application (Before Bed):

  1. Part hair to expose the scalp
  2. Apply Vitastim to treatment areas
  3. Massage into the scalp
  4. Sleep with a satin bonnet or pillowcase
  5. Allow the product to absorb overnight

Timing Around Natural Hair Routines:

Wash Days:

  • Apply Vitastim after washing and conditioning
  • Wait until hair is ~80% dry before application
  • Absorption is more effective on a clean, slightly damp scalp

Protective Styling:

  • Easier scalp access during braids, twists, or cornrows
  • Apply directly to exposed scalp between parts
  • Supports consistent application

Twist-Outs / Braid-Outs:

  • Apply before creating twists or braids
  • Product works while the style sets overnight
  • Integrates treatment into styling routine

Product Compatibility:

Natural hair requires oils and moisturisers. We guided Jordan on proper sequencing:

  1. Apply Vitastim (morning and evening)
  2. Wait 2–3 hours for full absorption
  3. Then apply natural hair products (oils, leave-ins, moisturisers)

This approach prevented product interference while maintaining healthy natural hair practices.

Internal Support Benefits:

  • Strengthened natural curl structure
  • Improved overall hair health (especially for moisture retention)

Timeline and Expectations:

  • Months 1–3: Stabilise shedding and halt progression
  • Months 4–6: Early regrowth visible (new coils forming)
  • Months 7–9: Noticeable density improvement in curl pattern
  • Month 10+: Full restoration, with curls returning to original thickness

The goal was to restore hair fullness and density while preserving curl pattern and natural texture — without compromise.

Jordan’s Outcome

With consistent treatment integrated into his routine, Jordan restored density while preserving his natural curl pattern.

Quantifiable Results:

  • Crown density substantially improved
  • Temple recession halted and partially reversed
  • Curl pattern preserved (Type 4B/4C remained consistent)
  • Natural hair health maintained throughout treatment
  • No chemical processing required

The Transformation:

Jordan's results demonstrate that male pattern baldness can be treated while maintaining natural hair. He regained density without sacrificing his curl pattern or personal identity.

Natural Hair Integrity Maintained:

Throughout treatment, Jordan continued:

  • Chemical-free hair care
  • Natural curl pattern (no relaxers, texturisers, or heat)
  • Moisture-focused routines
  • Protective styling when desired
  • Community engagement with natural hair practices

The treatment complemented his natural hair journey rather than disrupting it.

Confidence Restored:

"Getting my density back without losing my natural hair was everything,” Jordan said. "I didn't have to choose between treatment and staying natural. The process supported my curls — my hair is fuller, healthier, and still me."

Cultural Significance:

For Black men in the natural hair community, Jordan's results show that hair loss treatment can align with the maintenance of natural hair identity and texture.

The Before/After Reality:

  • Before: Thinning crown visible through natural curls, uneven density
  • After: Fuller crown, improved density, curls maintained, natural texture intact

Jordan's transformation demonstrates that natural hair care and MPB treatment are fully compatible.

"Getting my density back without losing my natural hair was everything. I didn't have to choose between treatment and staying natural. The process supported my curls — my hair is fuller, healthier, and still me."

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Male Pattern Baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common cause of hair loss in men, affecting around half of all men by the age of 50. It is driven by a genetic sensitivity to DHT — a testosterone derivative that causes hair follicles to progressively miniaturise. The result is a characteristic receding hairline and thinning crown. While Male Pattern Baldness is progressive, early specialist diagnosis and treatment can slow or halt the process and, in many cases, stimulate meaningful regrowth.
