Understanding Hair Loss in Black Patients
Hair loss in Black and mixed-heritage individuals often presents differently from hair loss in other ethnicities — and requires a different diagnostic approach. At The Hair Centre, Gary Heron has extensive experience assessing and treating hair loss across all hair types, including afro-textured, coily, and mixed-texture hair.
Common conditions we see in Black patients include:
Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA)
CCCA is a scarring alopecia that begins at the crown and radiates outward. It's one of the most common causes of progressive hair loss in Black women and requires early specialist intervention to prevent permanent follicle damage.
Traction Alopecia
Prolonged use of tight protective styles — braids, cornrows, weaves, and extensions — can cause traction-related hair loss, especially along the hairline and temples. When caught early, this is often reversible.
Breakage vs. Hair Loss
Many Black patients experience breakage (damage to the hair shaft) which is often confused with hair loss (damage to or disruption of the follicle). Correct diagnosis is critical, as the treatment approach differs significantly.
Protective Style Damage
Braids, weaves, and chemical treatments can all cause hair and scalp damage over time. We assess the type and extent of damage and create treatment plans to address both the scalp and hair health.
