Hazel’s Hair Loss Issues: Chemical Trauma, Traction Alopecia and Relaxer Damage

Hazel came to us with severe damage to the hair and scalp caused by a combination of Traction Alopecia, chemical hair trauma, and years of relaxer use. The progressive damage had affected her hairline and overall density significantly, causing both cosmetic and emotional distress.

Hazel’s Treatment Plan

Gary Heron prescribed a 14-month twice-daily treatment programme using 15% Vitastim and 15% Biostim. Hazel was guided to adjust her styling practices to remove the ongoing source of traction and chemical damage, which was essential to allow the follicles to recover without being re-stressed.

Hazel’s Outcome

After 14 months of consistent treatment and lifestyle adjustment, Hazel’s hair fully recovered. Her gallery of eight images shows the journey in detail — from initial severe chemical and traction damage through to a restored hairline and full density. Hazel’s hairline came back, and with it, her confidence.

"I had no idea the styles I loved were causing the problem. Gary didn't judge me — he just helped me fix it. My hairline is back."

— Hazel, Traction Alopecia client

What is Traction Alopecia?

Traction Alopecia is hair loss caused by repeated or prolonged tension on hair follicles from tight hairstyles such as braids, weaves, ponytails, or extensions. It most commonly affects women of Afro-Caribbean and South Asian heritage, where culturally popular tight styling practices create sustained pulling pressure on the follicles. When identified and treated early, Traction Alopecia is reversible — but prolonged tension can lead to permanent follicle damage, making early specialist assessment critical.
