What is Traction Alopecia?

Traction Alopecia is hair loss caused by repeated or prolonged tension on hair follicles from tight hairstyles such as braids, weaves, ponytails, or extensions. It most commonly affects women of Afro-Caribbean and South Asian heritage, where culturally popular tight styling practices create sustained pulling pressure on the follicles. When identified and treated early, Traction Alopecia is reversible — but prolonged tension can lead to permanent follicle damage, making early specialist assessment critical.
