Helen’s Menopausal Hair Loss: Telogen Effluvium and Female Pattern Balding

Helen was in her mid-50s when she came to us with menopausal hair loss symptoms that had been dismissed elsewhere as an inevitable consequence of ageing. After examination, Gary Heron diagnosed a combination of Telogen Effluvium and Female Pattern Balding, which together had reduced her hair density by around 50%. Both conditions were exacerbated by the hormonal changes of menopause.

Helen’s Treatment Plan

Gary prescribed a twice-daily treatment routine using 20% Vitastim and 20% Biostim, supplemented by Follicle Builder treatments every other day. The higher-strength formula was chosen to address the severity of the combined conditions and restore density as efficiently as possible.

Helen’s Outcome

Helen’s three-image gallery — before, during, and after — tells a clear story. Her hair volume returned substantially, and the excessive shedding associated with Telogen Effluvium was brought under control. Helen’s case demonstrates that menopausal hair loss is not something women simply have to accept — with the right diagnosis and treatment, meaningful recovery is entirely achievable.

"I'd been told that hair thinning at menopause was just something to put up with. Gary showed me that wasn't true. The treatment worked better than I could have hoped — I have proper hair volume again."

— Helen, Telogen Effluvium client

What is Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen Effluvium is a form of diffuse, temporary hair loss caused by a disruption to the normal hair growth cycle. A significant physical or emotional trigger — such as illness, surgery, major stress, nutritional deficiency, or hormonal change — causes a large proportion of hairs to simultaneously enter the resting (telogen) phase, leading to widespread shedding two to three months later. In most cases, Telogen Effluvium is reversible once the underlying trigger is addressed.

“Telogen Effluvium is one of the most misunderstood forms of hair loss. It looks alarming, but in the vast majority of cases it's completely reversible with the right approach.”
