Stephen’s Hair Loss Issue: Alopecia Barbae

Stephen came to us after noticing increasingly patchy facial hair — certain areas of his beard had simply stopped growing while surrounding areas remained unaffected. This localised presentation is characteristic of Alopecia Barbae, an autoimmune condition that targets the beard follicles and can progress if left untreated.

Stephen’s Treatment Plan

Following diagnosis, Gary Heron designed a topical treatment protocol to calm the autoimmune response affecting the beard area and reactivate the dormant follicles. Stephen’s plan was simple to apply at home and required no ongoing clinic visits once the routine was established.

Stephen’s Outcome

Stephen’s gallery of eight images documents the full journey — from active patchy loss through to complete beard recovery. The bald spots filled in progressively, and beard growth resumed uniformly across the affected areas. His confidence returned alongside the coverage.

"The patches in my beard were becoming really obvious and affecting my confidence. Gary diagnosed the problem straight away and gave me a clear treatment plan. Watching the patches fill back in was a huge relief."

— Stephen, Alopecia Barbae client

What is Alopecia Barbae?

Alopecia Barbae is a form of Alopecia Areata specifically affecting the beard area. It is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks beard hair follicles, producing circular bald patches in the facial hair. Like all forms of alopecia areata, it can appear suddenly and progress unpredictably — but follicles typically remain viable, meaning targeted treatment can restore beard growth in many cases.

“Alopecia Barbae responds well to early treatment. The beard follicles are rarely permanently damaged, and with the right approach, significant regrowth is very achievable.”
